Make Way for GF-6/API SP

Effective May 1, 2020, the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) introduced the next generation of industry standards for licensed Passenger Car Motor Oils (PCMOs), identified as GF-6. Developed to meet changing fuel economy and emissions standards for modern engine designs, GF-6 oils are engineered and rigorously tested to provide:

  • Enhanced fuel economy and retention
  • Better engine protection and durability
  • Superior overall wear protection
  • Protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI)

The new performance standard will be split into two sub-specifications: GF-6A and GF-6B. Licensed GF-6A oils are backwards compatible with ILSAC GF-5 requirements and are available for 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 viscosity grades. GF-6B oils provide similar performance benefits as GF-6A for newer model engines and is available for oils with 0W-16 viscosity grade.

As of last week, CHS began offering licensed GF-6A formulations of Cenex® Maxtron®, Auto Gold® and Auto Gold HMO products. As PCMO oil inventories are liquidated from CHS Lubricants Plants, CLTS and local cooperatives, they will replace GF-5 oils across the Cenex network.

For packaged products, new rear bottle labels of GF-6A product will bear the correctly updated API SP donut and performance benefit copy. Through this rolling category change, please closely manage any remaining packaged inventories of GF-5 product, moving those items out to end-users first.

Updated sales tools and product data sheets will be available on Cenex.com in the next few weeks with details on the new formulation and specifications.
